Community rallies behind father after crash leaves him paralyzed

A South Boston metal worker who was paralyzed in a horrific car crash is getting help from friends and family in a unique way.

Steven Sennett said his spinal cord was severed in June when he was ejected from a friend’s car during an accident.

Sennett had been vacationing in New Hampshire with friends when their car spun out of control.

“I don't remember anything about the accident or before it,” Sennett told FOX25. “At this point, I don't know if it's better to remember it, or not to remember it, because I’m kind of trying to keep a positive attitude.”

Sennett, who loved to jetski and snowboard, awoke to the news that he was a paraplegic.

“It was kind of difficult, I didn't really want to face it for a while,” Sennett said.

But the father of one told FOX25 he found a will to live and in the following weeks began making tremendous progress at Spaulding Rehabilitation Center.

“I think it's the support group around me. Spaulding, family, friends- everybody,” Sennett said.

Still, the former sheet metal worker, who helped construct buildings all over Boston as a member of Local 17, said he was concerned about losing his livelihood.

“You kind of take life for granted, and you have a new perspective on life now,” Sennett said.

That’s when his support system stepped in with a unique solution; labor unions in Dorchester put up a sign about Sennett’s accident on a billboard above I-93.

The billboard includes a link to his GoFundMe page, so others can help him with his recovery.

It’s the same sign that Sennett used to drive by every day on his way to work at Local 17.

“It’s pretty amazing, I never thought I would be on a billboard,” Sennett told FOX25 with a smile.

Now he can focus on his new job – of recovery.

“I'm just hoping that I can enjoy life and enjoy every day forward from here,” Sennett said.
