No-bail detention continued for man accused of shooting cops

FALMOUTH, Mass. — The man accused of shooting two Falmouth Police officers appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Malik Koval was brought into Falmouth District Court for a dangerousness hearing after being accused of shooting Falmouth officers Donald DeMiranda and Ryan Moore in July as they responded to a reported disturbance involving Koval.

Both officers survived, and Koval was shot several times as police returned fire. DeMiranda was shot in the shoulder, and his bulletproof vest stopped a shot to his chest. Moore suffered a bullet graze wound to his neck.

Koval will be held without bail for another 120 days, under an agreement between the prosecution and defense.

Koval's mother, who faces charges in the incident along with her other son, had no comment outside of court Wednesday.

His attorney says Koval has recovered from his injuries.

"Apparently, the police officers have, too. Everyone is glad that is the case. As far as the legal process, that is going to take time," said attorney Steve Loesch.

Koval is due back in court on September 26.
