Murder victim Jeff Curley’s father concerned about ever having justice

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The 1997 abduction and murder of 10-year-old Jeff Curley in Cambridge remains one of our area’s most shocking crimes.

In October, Charles Jaynes, one of two men convicted in the case was denied parole.

“They saw right through him, saw him for what he is, a con man and he’s bad,” Bob Curley, Jeff’s father, said.

Bob Curley is grateful the State Parole Board denied Jayne’s early release.

Jaynes can try again in June 2025.

But because it took sixteen months for the parole board to make its ruling, Bob Curley feels it won’t be too much longer before he and his family must start preparing for yet another parole hearing.

“This is pretty much my life, going through these parole hearings with Jaynes. Then it will continue with my children, my grandchildren so it’s never going to end. As long as Jaynes is alive, it’s never going to end,” Curley said.

Right now, Massachusetts lawmakers are considering a bill that would outlaw no-parole sentences, making every inmate eligible for parole.

Among them, Sal Sicari, the other man convicted of killing Jeff Curley.

Sicari and Jaynes were separately tried. Sicari was convicted of First Degree Murder, Jaynes Second Degree.

If life no parole is abolished, making Sicari eligible for parole, Bob Curley would have to deal with two sets of parole hearings.

“It’s never going to end, if eliminating life without parole passes, then it’s just going to be a never-ending cycle of something that happened in,” Curley told me. “I don’t think they really comprehend the truth of the trauma that inflicts on families of murder victims.”

Bob Curley tells me he thinks of his 10-year-old son every day, and he tries to heal by keeping his anger in check, and by remembering the kindness strangers have shown his family.

He hopes the politicians and the justice system won’t let him down.
