Crews work to remove leaking excavator that sank in Hingham Harbor

HINGHAM, Mass. — Crews started working early Saturday morning to get an excavator out of Hingham Harbor. By late morning, they were successful.

Two cranes along with other machinery were set up to pull the excavator out of the water.

Two other excavators had been digging around the one that was stuck in the mud while the tide remains low.

The Hingham Fire department says the construction company ACK Marine was working on a state boat ramp project when this excavator got stuck in the mud on Thursday, but the fire department wasn’t notified until Friday.

Since then, crews have been focused on the clean-up and figuring out how to get the huge machine out of the water.

They also set up containment booms to prevent oil from spreading out to sea.

“We know what weight of this is, so it’s easy to say this piece of equipment would drag this is piece would lift it, said Chief Steve Murphy. “But when you’re dealing with a suction that’s the unknown on this.”

A Clean Harbors crew also came out to suction oil off the surface of the water Friday.

“An excavator that type could contain about 60 gallons of diesel and the oil and hydraulic oil and everything, so we obviously don’t want that getting in the ocean and causing other issues,” said Chief Murphy.

We reached out to ACK Marine about what happened, but they declined to comment – only confirming everyone is okay.
