BOSTON — Boston has been ranked among the top five worst cities for traffic in the world, with time lost to congestion skyrocketing by 72 percent last year, according to a new study.
INRIX, a transportation data and analytics company, recently published its annual “Global Traffic Scorecard,” which identifies and ranks congestion and mobility trends in more than 1,000 cities across 50 countries.
In compiling its 2023 report, INRIX says it compared year-over-year and pre-pandemic traffic trends, in addition to emerging geopolitical and economic trends that have impacted daily commutes.
The study found that Boston was the second-worst city for traffic in America and the fourth-worst city in the world.
In 2022, Boston drivers lost an average of 134 hours sitting in traffic, up 56 hours from 2021.
Boston only trailed Chicago (155 hours) for most congested American city and ranked fourth globally behind London (156 hours) and Paris (138 hours). New York (117 hours) rounded out the global top five.
Congestion cost the average motorist in Boston $2,270 last year, according to the study.
Researchers also noted that Massachusetts is home to one of the worst traffic corridors in the country.
I-93 south from US-3 to MA-3 was ranked fourth most congested corridor, causing drivers to lose 99 hours total during the 4 p.m. rush hour.
Despite the massive year-to-year increase in time lost to congestion, traffic was still 10 percent below pre-pandemic levels.
