Travelers at Logan react to CDC’s warning against traveling for Thanksgiving

BOSTON — With coronavirus cases surging across the country, the CDC is asking people not to travel this Thanksgiving.

Most travelers at Logan Airport told Boston 25 they’re ok with the warning.

“Yeah it makes sense to me it’s kind of crazy right now and everybody need to be as safe as possible,” said Bobby Zeolla, of Norton.

Logan was not packed but was certainly busy - at least by COVID-19 standards. The CDC hopes it stays that way.

This holiday season, health officials are also strongly suggesting people only eat with those they live with. Many travelers like Owen Roberts say they’re already curtailed their plans.

“We’ve been debating on what to do between getting together with whole family or just staying local and it’s probably just going to be stay local, immediate family,” said Roberts.

The CDC advises you ask yourself some questions before traveling, including:

  • Is someone in your household at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19?
  • Are cases increasing in your community?
  • Are local hospitals in the area you’ll be travelling to being overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases?

To keep hospital beds open, travelers said they’d be willing to sacrifice their get togethers.

“I think it makes sense,” said Roberts. “Save the hospitals for people who need it.”

For students it’s a tough call, but Eli Pattison, who attends Dartmouth College, says they operate on a trimester system so he has to head home. To do that safely, he’s gotten three COVID-19 tests this week. He adds his family is also planning a very a low-key Thanksgiving.

“So my family normally celebrates with my grandparents, but that’s off the table this year,” said Pattison.

If you do have family members traveling home for Thanksgiving, the CDC recommends that gatherings should be held outdoors and, if possible, with people staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks. To avoid spreading the virus, just one person should be serving the food.
