BOSTON — The world’s oldest full rigged ship in operation will be docking at Boston Harbor in an effort to promote Sail Boston 2017.
Sail Boston is a non-profit organization that has hosted over 300 international tall ships and vessels to Boston and the Massachusetts coastal communities.
The Sørlandet will be docked at Fan Pier from April 9-14 as a promotion for Sail Boston in June. The Norwegian Tall Ship is used to raise awareness about Sail Boston’s Visiting Ship Program, whose goal is to promote maritime heritage and tourism.
The ship was built in Kristiansand, Norway in 1927 as a fully-rigged ship to allow young people to train for the merchant marine. Today the Sørlandet continues its mission to educate the youth. It acts like a floating school that houses 50 junior and senior high school students who study abroad for a full year aboard the ship.
The public can board the Sørlandet for free from April 10-12 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
