Widow trying to pay for funeral scammed after dialing wrong number

NASHUA, N.H. — A Peabody man is facing felony charges after police said he took money from a woman thinking she was making a payment for a funeral.

Police in Nashua, New Hampshire, said an unidentified victim had made arrangements for her husband’s funeral at Dolans Funeral Home in Chelmsford and was trying to phone in a payment for services when she accidentally dialed the wrong number.

A man picked up the phone after the woman dialed the number, and when she asked if it was the funeral home, the man said “yes.”

The woman explained that she had a payment to make and the man told her that he would have someone call her back.

A man then called her back and made arrangements to take the payment at the Pheasant Lane Mall. She met with a man named Kenneth Psomos, 49, of Peabody, and told the victim to make her check out to AKS Inc.

The woman questioned that, but eventually handed over a check and some cash.

Through the investigation it was learned that AKS Inc is a cleaning company associated with Psomos.

As the investigation continued, an arrest warrant was issued, charging him with theft by deception.

Psomos was arrested Wednesday and was released on $3,000 bail.

He’s expected to be arraigned in court Aug. 9.

The charge he’s facing is a class a felony and those charges are punishable by up to 15 years in jail if found guilty.
