NEWTON, Mass. — Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in West Newton has reopened after a car crash last March killed two people inside.

Brad Cassler was behind the wheel of the car driving down Chestnut Street when he crossed Washington Street, went over the sidewalk and through the wall of the building, hitting several people who were dining, picking up food, or working during the dinner rush.

The popular neighborhood pizza joint reopened Monday, and people who live nearby were excited to support the restaurant they love.

“We’ve been looking at it being finished and we’re excited it’s finally open,” Leah Micalizzi said.

Since the crash, steel barriers have been built to prevent another tragedy.

Eleanor Miele and Gregory Morin were killed in the March 1, 2016 crash; seven other people were injured.

“It’s really sentimental to be here where the tragedy happened, so it’s really great that we’re back,” employee Cristain Gaines said.
