Tax-free weekend underway with a new look amid COVID-19

DEDHAM, Mass. — Before seeing refrigerators, grills or washing machines, those visiting Poirier Sales & Service in Norwood are greeted with a temperature check and offered a mask or sanitizer, if needed. Even with this family-owned business running as essential during the pandemic, the state’s sales-tax-free holiday is a boost.

“Every year it means a lot and this year it’s no exception,” said Michael Poirier, the president.

The store has limited the number of total people who can go inside due to gathering guidelines, but a steady stream of foot traffic could be seen inside the showroom Saturday.

One pandemic-related issue for this shop is that many products remain on backorder – and refrigerators are among the hardest items to find.

Elsewhere, at Brockton’s Westgate Mall, there were plenty of shoppers stopping at Best Buy and Dicks Sporting Goods. Many told Boston 25 News that they were not aware of the tax-free holiday; that wasn’t the case for Bill Allen, who was in need of sneakers.

“Money is a little bit shorter, so why not [shop now]?,” Allen asked.

Staff could be seen managing a line of shoppers heading into Dedham’s Best Buy.

The sales tax holiday continues Sunday for most single items under $2,500. Some of the items that are not eligible for the tax break include alcohol, tobacco and marijuana products.
