Suspects charged in fatal Canal Street to face a judge Monday

BOSTON — Two men charged in connection with a fatal weekend shooting near TD Garden will face a judge Monday.

Police say the completely unprovoked attack happened just after 2 a.m. on Saturday in the area of 101 Canal Street.

At the scene, officers found 25-year-old Fouad Baghdad suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Baghdad's family says he was ambushed and shot over the gold chain he had been wearing around his neck.

Police arrested 22-year-old Bryan Rice and 24-year-old Anthony Baptista-Goncalves in a car not far from where Baghdad was shot. Rice is facing charges of murder and attempted robbery, and Baptista-Goncalves is facing charges of being an accessory to murder before and after the fact. Investigators said they found a firearm inside the vehicle.

"He never said I have a gun, he never said it," said Mary Ann Zoulalian, a family friend. "He just pulled it out and killed him."

Zoulalian's son has been good friends with Baghdad and a group of five others ever since they attended Boston Latin School together.

Zoulalian told Boston 25 News that Baghdad moved to the United States with his family from Algeria when he and his brother were young. On Monday morning, Fouad's brother told us he and his brother were actually born and raise in Boston and their parents moved here from Algeria before they were born.

"It just hurts too much, you broke our hearts, you broke our hearts over a chain," said Zoulalian. "I have one biological son and I have six others who are [my] boys by choice."

Baghdad was with some of those friends on the night he was shot and killed. The group had been inside Banner's Bar watching the Celtics game and had chosen to continue the night at another bar in the area.

"He loved beautiful things and you know what he worked hard for that," said Zoulalian. "You're telling me now people can't walk around with things they bought with their hard-earned money."

Zoulalian says she expects family and friends to pack the courtroom at Monday's arraignment.
