MELROSE, Mass. — A Melrose man is expected to be arraigned on animal cruelty charges Tuesday in Malden.
Adam Crook is facing animal cruelty charges after he allegedly dragged his dog out of his house, beat it to death with a rock and then buried it in the backyard.
Melrose Police, federal investigators and the Animal Rescue League of Boston showed up at a home on Mount Zion Road on Saturday when a neighbor reported seeing Crook, 44, kill the dog Friday night.
Crook was arrested on animal cruelty charges and released on personal recognizance.
"Given what this suspect is being charged with and his alleged actions, you know, this is cruelty at its height," said Mike Defina, the spokesperson for the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
According to police, after the dog died from its injuries, Crook found a shovel and buried the animal in his backyard.
With a warrant, investigators said they exhumed the dog Saturday and a necropsy on the dog was scheduled for yesterday.
On Sunday, neighbors were reluctant to speak on the subject since the suspect is now out on personal recognizance.
"This suspect's alleged actions are absolutely reprehensible and inexcusable," said Melrose Police chief Michael Lyle.
"I'm grateful for the excellent investigative work of Melrose Police Sgt. Brian Ladner, Detective Sgt. Paul McNamara, Officer Pamela Daye and Lt. Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League that resulted in this arrest."
Crook faces up to seven years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The Animal Rescue League said this case serves as a reminder for everyone to always look out for and report any kind of animal abuse.
"It comes down to people really being vigilant," Defina said. "We are always so grateful to those who speak for those who can't speak for themselves, and in this case we are taking about a defenseless animal."
