BOSTON — Another big construction project is about to begin in Boston. This time, it will effect Charlestown and North End commuters.
The North Washington Bridge Project is expected to begin later this year, right on the heels of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge Replacement Project that backed up traffic for about a week.
MassDOT tells Boston 25 News reporter Crystal Haynes that they have to do the foundation of the bridge, work underwater and parts of the bridge have to be demolished first, which will require detours and create backups.
One of Boston's iconic attractions will be impacted by the project.
"The Freedom Trail runs over the Washington Bridge," said Suzanne Taylor, Freedom Trail Foundation.
Part of the actual trail will be moved to the opposite side of the street during construction.
It's the third major construction project on or near the trail, but the Comm. Ave project only took days to complete, rather than years.
MassDOT tells Haynes they didn't have to replace the substructure of the Comm. Ave bridge, which allowed crews to use a rapid replacement approach.
The contractor for this bridge project has the incentive to get it done on time as there are fines of $40,000 a day if the project runs late.
