BOSTON — In just one day, Boston saw two construction accidents just a mile apart from each other.
In the North End, at around 8:30 a.m. a woman in her 30's walking her dog was severely injured after debris from a construction site five stories high fell on her.
Witnesses nearby provided emergency aid to the woman before she was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is currently in stable, but critical condition.
"Just the drama of this metal barricade falling down on this woman from 5 stories up, it shakes you up," said Jacelyn Botti. "Honestly, it could have been me."
According to Boston Police Officer Kim Tavares, the object may have been a pole or some other debris that possibly fell from the construction site. Investigators believe it came down from a crane that was lifting materials to the roof of the building.
Less than seven hours later, outside the TD Garden, a set of metal beams being lifted by a crane at the Hub on Causeway construction site fell down nearly 50 feet.
The metal beams, which weight about several hundred pounds each, plummeted down onto a flatbed trailer, causing an impact that was felt across the area. Surveillance video shows a worker jumping off the trailer just before the beams hit the vehicle.
While no injuries were reported at this scene, witnesses were certainly shaken up about what they had just heard and felt.
"We saw the beams being lifted up on the crane then we saw it snap [then] we heard it [fall], it was crazy - the whole building shook," said Leanne Brum, a witness. "It was just the most ungodly noise ever."
OSHA was notified of both incidents and is actively investigating both.
The Inspectional Services Department released a statement to Boston 25 News on Thursday saying:
"We are actively working with our partner agencies to determine the cause of both incidents that occurred today, and we will use the information learned through those investigations to inform if any actions are needed."
John Moriarty & Associates, a local construction company and a contractor working on the renovations at TD Garden, released a statement on Thursday evening regarding the second incident:
This afternoon as a load of steel was being lifted off a delivery truck, it dislodged and fell back onto the truck inside the job site. No one was injured. We are currently working with OSHA to review the situation.
