North Reading police searching for reckless driver caught on camera

NORTH READING, Mass. — A driver in North Reading nearly caused a head-on crash, and it was all caught on video.

FOX25’s Christine McCarthy spoke with the man who recorded that video, and police who are asking for help identifying the driver.

Al Pereira said he constantly sees people texting and driving, and while it’s not clear what caused this driver to swerve into the wrong lane, he’s worried next time it happens he will see something tragic.

“The hairs on the back of my neck kind of stood up, because it was like it doesn't happen,” he said.

On Sunday, a car swerved into his lane on route 28 in North Reading.

“If I had left the house five seconds earlier or I would've been going a little bit faster, it would've been a head-on collision,” he said.

Pereira shared the video online. He believes the driver was distracted, perhaps on his phone.

“This was something people needed to see and learn from,” Pereira said.

Just over two weeks ago Pereira snapped pictures of another crash in North reading, which another driver recorded on cell phone video of the car in front of him weaving between the lanes and finally crashing head-on.

The driver of the sedan in that crash was charged with texting and driving.

Last weekend, Hingham police say the teenage driver of a jeep was on his cell phone when he crashed into another car.

“If I capture something, maybe somebody will learn from somebody else's mistake,” Pereira said. “All you’ve got to do is look down for that split second and you're going to crash into somebody, you're going to kill somebody.”

Local and state police have been cracking down on distracted driving all month and hope to prevent more dangerous situations and crashes.
