NH man protesting against Walmart due to construction of new store

MANCHESTER, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A New Hampshire man is protesting against retail giant Walmart after he said construction associated with a new store has destroyed his front yard.

Daniel Gryseels has signs protesting Walmart staked in his yard at the corner of Bow Street and Brown Avenue in Manchester after fighting with the company for nearly two weeks.

"Walmart's a big company and they seem to get what they want, at the expense of the residents in this area," Gryseels told FOX25.

Walmart is putting in a traffic signal at the edge of Gryseel's property on Brown Avenue to help deal with the traffic expected once the store opens on Gold Street, about a mile away.
Gryseels said he was aware the traffic light would be built near his home, but had no idea that construction workers would start by unexpectedly placing a fence in his front yard.

"They should at least give me consideration and courtesy of what they were gonna do. I've had no notice, and that was upsetting to come home and find my yard vandalized," Gryseels said.

Gryseels said workers threw street signs in his yard and tore up markers that delineated his property from the right of way along the road.

"There is no eminent domain, they have no right to go on my property," Gryseels said.

Gryseels said the workers did repair some of the damage, but that things turned confrontational Wednesday when he stood at the edge of his property as workers began drilling the hole that would house the traffic signal.

"I stood there, hoping I could slow them down from doing it, to compensate me for the damages they did to my property," Gryseels said. "They drilled in front of my face, nobody cared about my safety. They allowed it to happen and I was shocked at that."

In a statement, a Walmart spokesperson said, "We have been working with the homeowner since this matter arose, and we have addressed his concerns. We look forward to completing construction now and opening next year to serve Walmart customers in Manchester."

Gryseels said all he wants now is compensation for the damages and the time he missed work to deal with the mess.

"It's more about doing the damage in the process of getting what they want, and not reimbursing me," Gryseels said.
