MBTA unveils new Orange Line prototype

BOSTON — The MBTA is showing off its new idea for Orange Line cars.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority revealed images of a new prototype subway car for the Orange Line.

The cars could be going into service in January 2019 to replace the existing Orange Line cars that are decades old.

Chinese company CRRC MA Corp. will manufacture 152 Orange Line cars and 123 Red Line cars at a factory in Springfield under a new contract.%

The lines are due to be upgraded, which will include the new cars, track improvements and new signals.

A small version of one of the cars will be will be sent to Boston from China in the next few weeks.

Trains to be tested on the tracks will be shipped in December 2017 for the Orange Line and March 2019 for the Red Line.
