SEEKONK (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A huge fire burned at a vacant building Tuesday morning in Seekonk.
The flames broke out around 6 a.m. at a vacant old mill building on Maple Avenue. Several area departments responded to the scene. Maple Avenue at Route 152 was closed.
The building was condemned after a roof collapse in 2009. No injuries were reported.
Residents around the building were concerned about the fire spreading to their homes. They were hosing their yards down when the fire was in full swing.
Firefighters also battled a house fire Tuesday morning in Rhode Island, near Georgiaville Pond in Smithfield. The entire house was fully engulfed in flames by 6:30 a.m.
The home sits on a cul-de-sac off River Road. It's unclear if the owners were at home at the time.
According
to the Seekonk Treasurer's Office, there is a lien on the building for
back taxes owed. The owner reportedly owes more than $53,000 to the
town.
In 2009 the value of the building was more than $1 million; however, prior to the fire, the value was $380,000.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
