Man taken into custody after standoff in Medway

MEDWAY, Mass. — An altercation between neighbors in Medway ended peacefully after law enforcement from several communities responded with heavy equipment.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. on Goldenrod Drive when Russell McCarter allegedly went into a neighbor’s garage while smoking a cigarette.

Police said the homeowner tried to chase him out, but McCarter grabbed a knife.

“As he tried to chase [McCarter] out of his garage, [McCarter] reached into his back area, and waved a knife at him,” Medway Police Chief Allen Tingley said.

McCarter then barricaded himself in his own home, according to police, and the SWAT team was called.

“They tried to negotiate with Mr. McCarter to come out. First verbally,” Tingley said.

When that failed, police entered the home and found McCarter armed with a fire extinguisher, police say.

A Taser was used to disarm him, and McCarter was taken into custody and brought to the hospital in Natick for an evaluation. Police said he will be facing charges.
