IPSWICH, Mass. — A father and son-in-law were rescued several hours after going for a swim at Crane Beach in Ipswich Tuesday.

The pair went swimming in wet suits around 5:30 p.m., but never returned home. When family members became concerned, they went to the beach searching for the men but could only find their bikes.

Emergency responders were then called to the scene. Around 7:20 p.m., the son-in-law, 28-year-old Alexander Auerbach, was able to get to shore and make his way to the command post.

Coast Guard rescuers continued to search the waters around Crane Beach. Two hours later, around 9:20 p.m., they found the father, 58-year-old Randall Hackett. Hackett was found in the water about 2 miles south from the beach and a quarter mile from shore.

The water temperature had been below 60 degrees.
