Man killed in Westfield house fire blamed on smoking

WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Fire officials say a 64-year-old man has died after a house fire in Westfield.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan and Westfield Fire Chief Mary Regan said Wednesday that the fire early Wednesday appears to have been caused by improper disposal of smoking materials.

The officials say the fire started on the living room couch. They believe man was the only occupant of the house on Family Lane.

Investigators found the damaged remnants of smoke alarms in the house, but could not determine if they were working when the fire broke out.

Coan said the man is the 27 person to die in a fire in the state this year.
