Woman, dog die in house fire on Cape Cod

CENTERVILLE, Mass. — A woman and her dog died in a house fire in Centerville on Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The fire happened at 79 Harrison Road at around 7:45 a.m.

Emergency crews responded to the home after a neighbor reported smoke coming from the residence and blackened windows.

When firefighters arrived, they found a single-story, wood-framed residence with smoke visible from the windows, eaves and flue.

“Fire crews launched an aggressive interior attack on the fire and initiated a search for victims,” the Centerville Fire Department said in a statement.

Rescue crews removed the woman from the home, and attempted CPR on the woman, who was sent by ambulance To Cape Cod Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Crews also removed her pet dog, which had died, from the home.

“The fire was quickly brought under control and no fire personnel were reported injured,” the statement said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal, State Police, Barnstable Police and local fire investigators.

Several communities provided mutual aid, including Hyannis, Barnstable, Cotuit, and West Barnstable Fire departments, Barnstable Police and Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department.
