Waltham Police investigating 11th reported attack in connection to string of assaults

WALTHAM, Mass. — Police in Waltham are investigating an alleged 11th attack in the city in connection to a string of assaults that have happened in Waltham during the month of November. Those assaults have all happened between Nov. 10 and Nov. 27, including this latest alleged one, police said.

Waltham Police released surveillance video on Saturday of a man they believe is responsible for a series of attacks over the past two and a half weeks. In the video, a man is seen running down a street wearing jeans and what appears to be a black hoodie.

Police stated in a Facebook post that they have not yet been able to identify the man and are asking for the public’s help. The post did not state when or where the video was taken.

No arrests have been made, McCarthy said. Police are unsure whether it is one person or multiple assailants, but said the way attacks are happening are very similar.

McCarthy said that five attacks have happened at the GardenCrest Apartments on Middlesex Circle and five attacks were reported in the downtown area near Chestnut and Charles streets.

On Wednesday night, hours before Thanksgiving, Emerson Aroche Paz was walking to his Waltham home when he saw a hooded man approach him on the sidewalk.

Aroche Paz thought nothing of it as stepped aside to let the man pass when suddenly he was struck.

“I just feel a big hit on my left eye,” said Aroche Paz. “I lose my balance, I almost go to the ground. I don’t get down. I tried to stand up. He hit me again one more time.”

Aroche Paz said he was stunned, his face was covered with blood.

He tried to take a look at his attacker, but the hooded stranger was gone.

“I feel angry, I didn’t expect that,” Aroche Paz said. “This guy’s a coward. He hit me for no reason. He hit me from the back.”

Aroche Paz is one of 11 people who have been attacked in Waltham since Nov. 10th.

In each case, the suspect approaches from behind, and strikes a victim with an unknown object before fleeing. Each attack is unprovoked.

Aroche Paz said he could not see the suspect’s face because it was fully covered.

“I got seven stitches on top of my left eye,” said Aroche Paz. “I have a broken bone on the top, broken bone on the bottom. I have a broken nose.”

Aroche Paz says he has no idea why he was attacked.

“There’s a lot of people, they just hate other people for no reason,” said Aroche Paz. “We have to stop it.”
