Taunton woman dies after being hit by car while walking

TAUNTON, Mass. — A 59-year-old Taunton woman has died after being hit by an SUV while walking in the city on Tuesday night.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. on Main Street near Cedar Street in Taunton. The victim was taken to Morton Hospital after police arrived on scene and later died there from her injuries.

She has been identified as Lisa Rocha.

Police said that the Chevrolet SUV, driven by 42-year-old Roland Escobar of Taunton, allegedly fled the scene before hitting another vehicle a short distance away on Summer Street and flipping over. Escobar was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Escobar was later arrested and faces the following charges: Manslaughter, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon-Motor Vehicle, Operating While Under the Influence of Drugs-Felony Homicide, Operating While Under the Influence of Drugs-Death Resulting, Operating While Under the Influence of Drugs-Second Offense, Leaving the Scene-Death Resulting and Leaving the Scene of Property Damage.

He will be arraigned Wednesday in Taunton District Court.
