Provincetown plane crash victims suffer burns, broken bones

Provincetown plane crash

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — Federal investigators are looking into what went wrong with a Cape Air passenger plane that crashed at Provincetown Municipal Airport. That plane was seen on fire moments after it went off the runway and into a wooded area Thursday around 4 p.m.

Cape Air said Flight 2072 had taken off from Boston Logan Airport about an hour before the crash. Fire officials said six passengers and a pilot on board were transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with burns and broken bones.

According to firefighters on scene, park rangers pulled the victims out of the burning twin-engine Cessna 402 right after the crash. Firefighters arrived on scene shortly thereafter and extinguished the flames in the plane’s cockpit and wings.

Provincetown’s Town Manager Alex Morse said weather appears to have caused an issue with the landing leading to the crash. The area saw significant rainfall throughout the day and night before and after the plane went off the runway at the town-owned airport.

Authorities have not released any additional information about those who were on board. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are now leading the investigation. An NTSB investigator is expected to be on scene Friday morning.

Those who believe they may have loved ones on board Flight 2072 should call Cape Air at 888-253-4115 or 209-208-6717.
