Police identify victim killed in a barbershop shooting in Dorchester

BOSTON — What is usually a place of community camaraderie turned into a source of community horror after a man was shot and killed inside a Boston barbershop Wednesday night. Police identified the man shot and killed just before 7:30 p.m. as Herman Maxwell Hylton, 43, of Roxbury.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting happened has a solution for police and city officials.

“Put Boston on a curfew. That’s what I feel like,” said the woman who asked not to be identified.

She believes a curfew is needed to stop the shootings and deaths that plague her Dorchester neighborhood.

“It’s devastating. I don’t want to come out of my house anymore. It’s just it’s not good. It’s not safe,” she said.

She spoke to the media in front of Celebrity cut* where friends say Hylton was a barber.

Flowers were spread across Hylton’s car and the sidewalk in front of the barbershop which is known to be a popular local business where just weeks ago they gave kids free back-to-school haircuts.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu acknowledged the rash of deadly shootings on Thursday at an event nearby. Over the weekend, three people were killed by gunfire including a young mother.

“We know it’s been a couple of weeks that have been very stressful for many of our community members,” said Mayor Wu.

Many who live nearby are scared and concerned about the senseless bloodshed.

“People are turning to violence to settle the situation and it’s not good,” said Shawn Harris who tells Boston 25 he knew the victim.

And it’s gotten so bad that people are saying that leaving the city may be their only option.

“I’m just shocked. I don’t want to come out of my house anymore. I don’t want to live here anymore, said a woman who lives nearby.

Police are asking the community for tips and help to locate the shooter.
