BOSTON — Two men convicted of killing a Boston father in front of his pregnant wife were sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Michael Carleton, 36, of Mattapan, and Travis Phillips, 31, of Dorchester, declined to give a statement in the Suffolk County courtroom.
Their sentences were delivered after powerful victim impact statements from the family of Deondra Lee.
Lee was watching the July 4th fireworks in 2018 when he was shot at point blank range.
It happened at the corner of Dacia and Brookford Streets in Dorchester.
Prosecutors said the two convicted killers had no motive and did not appear to know Lee.
“You two have made my life a living hell,” said widow Shandra Waller. “Exactly a week later, I gave birth to my twins alone.”
Waller described the agony of giving birth to twins without having a moment to grieve the tragedy.
“The twins were just a week old when they met their father for the first time as he laid lifeless in a casket… a memory neither one of them will remember,” said Waller.
Two of Lee’s children were playing across the street when he was gunned down.
A statement from Lee’s 11-year-old son was read out loud in the courtroom for the murderers to hear.
“You took the person who was going to teach me how to be a man and teach me how to do things on own,” said the statement read by ADA Iannini. “Who is going to teach me how to be a professional football player and be the best player of all time?”
In addition to life sentences, both Carleton and Phillips also received sentences of not more than five years or less than four years for firearms convictions.
