LATEST: Crashes reported in NH, speed restriction on Mass. Pike as storm blankets some areas in snow

HOPKINTON, N.H. — Police in some New England communities are urging drivers to stay off the roads because slick conditions are leading to crashes as snow and rain moves through the region.

“As the morning commute begins, troopers are responding to motor vehicle crashes throughout the state,” New Hampshire State Police said in a tweet. “If you need to be on the road, please plan ahead...Give yourself extra time to get to your destination and drive according to conditions.”

A photo shared by the department showed a Toyota Prius that had skidded off a snow-covered lane on the southbound side of Interstate 89 in Hopkinton.

In Massachusetts, transportation officials announced a 40-mph speed restriction on Interstate 90 between Lee and Westfield.

Winter storm warnings, watches, and advisories have been issued in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. More than a foot of snow is possible in some communities, including western Massachusetts and parts of southern, central, and northern New Hampshire.

MassDOT said it has about 170 pieces of equipment deployed in storm operations across the western part of the state.

The town of Winchendon, Massachusetts, woke up to a winter wonderland as the storm pushed into Worcester County.

Eastern Massachusetts is expected to see mostly rain and strong wind gusts.

The storm is expected to persist through Friday before moving out Saturday morning.

Maine State Police also reported about a dozen crashes and slide-offs due to black ice and the inclement weather.
