Intense storm leaves thousands without power across the state

BOSTON — Across the state, heavy rain and high winds tore down trees and flooding was a problem in many parts of the area.

In Waltham, wind gusts were at least 60 miles per hour. A large tree branch hit a house on Winter Street.

By Monday evening, strong gusts of wind and pouring rain were bringing down tree limbs, causing power outages and making roads treacherous for drivers.

“We just heard the thud and fire trucks a few minutes,” said Leah Veduccio, a neighbor.

Veduccio said part of the branch caused damage inside of the home.

“The tree did go through the bedroom roof. They just had some work done in the house,” said Veduccio.

Veduccio says one of the homeowners was home when the tree branch came crashing down.

“The guy was on a Zoom call and heard the tree come through the roof, it was in their bedroom,” said Veduccio.

Over in East Boston, dangerous wind gusts ripped off the siding on a building and debris was flying everywhere.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In Cambridge, wind gusts knocked down a tree and it was the same story in Brookline.

“I was looking at my phone seeing if there was a tornado warning, we heard barrels were flying around and it was pretty intense,” said Veduccio.

While they were shook by the experience, the homeowners in Waltham are okay.

As of 5:30 Tuesday morning, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency power outage map showed just over 6,000 customers still without power.
