BOSTON — Fenway Park is getting some new sod, wIth just one month until the Red Sox home opener.
On Monday, crews could be seen installing the new grass for the outfield. The process to get here has been weeks in the making.
The old sod was removed back in late February.
David Mellor, the senior director of grounds for the Boston Red Sox has been tracking the progress on Instagram.
Mellor, and his service dog Drago, were on the field early Monday awaiting the start of the sod work.
The last time the sod was replaced at Fenway Park was in the fall of 2019.
“Impacts from Mother Nature and wear from games and extra events during and after the season can all play roles on if and when we do any partial or full sod work,” according to a team spokesman.
The Red Sox are now at Spring Training, which opened over the weekend after a lengthy lockout.
The home opener for the Red Sox is scheduled for Friday, April 15 at 2:10 p.m. against the Twins.
