Alewife Red Line service likely closed for week following garage crash

CAMBRIDGE, Mass — The MBTA says the Alewife Parking Garage will be closed through at least Monday and will likely remain closed for the entire week.

Commuters will need to hop on shuttles buses to navigate into the city after a car crash left a car dangling off the top level Saturday.

A young girl received minor injuries when a 10,000-pound concrete barrier fell onto the glass roof of the train station.

“It was unfortunate for that person just to so happen to walk under it at that moment,” said Terrance Hill.

Crews have spent all weekend cleaning up the damage – and evaluating whether the building is safe.

However, those who have their car at the station will be able to get it if it is already parked there.

“When I was coming this way I did see there was a big crane near the entrance. I normally go to the smaller entrance,” said Miles Fairley.

While the repair work continues, the garage and train station will remain closed.

The MBTA says shuttle buses will replace the Red Line from Alewife to Davis Square for the rest of this week.

Alewife is a major hub for the red line, so many commuters may need extra time to ride shuttle buses starting Monday.

Boston 25 News has reached out to Transit Police to see whether the driver of the vehicle will face any charges but has not yet received an answer.
