MIAA vote set for Tuesday on start date for fall high school sports season

BOSTON — The governing body for high school sports in Massachusetts is set to vote Tuesday on a start date for the fall sports season against the backdrop of a continuing global pandemic and uncertainty surrounding what school itself will look like at the start of the year.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) board of directors is expected to vote on a Sept. 14 start date at its virtual meeting. The MIAA COVID-19 Task Force recommended the date, in part, because it’s after the start of the school year, allowing students to adjust to the new realities there.

The organization’s task force also recently assigned risk categories to various high school sports at its July 15 meeting.

Much uncertainty remains about which high school sports will be permitted to proceed, regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s MIAA vote. State government will have the final decision-making authority over which sports will play and under what regulations or restrictions.
