Boston’s Phase 3 begins Monday

BOSTON — Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said the city will start Phase 3 of its reopening Monday, a week after the rest of the state moved ahead.

Fitness clubs, outdoor sports practices, and museums are among the facilities given the green light, with restrictions.

Walsh said the city will continue to look at health data trends but said hospital intensive care units are far below surge-levels.

The positive test rate is down to 15.5% from 35% earlier in the pandemic, said Walsh.

“Due to Boston’s unique needs and challenges, we used this additional time to ensure Phase 3 of our reopening guidance is accessible and prioritizes public health and safety,” said Mayor Walsh. “As I have said, we are seeing disturbing numbers in many parts of the country right now. As we implement a safe, cautious, phased-in reopening strategy, this is not the time to let up, either in our collective risk management or in our personal precautions.”

The city will begin issuing permits for outdoor events including low to moderate contact sports such as softball and baseball with a limit of 50 participants.

Boston City Hall will not reopen for public meetings during step one of Phase 3, said Walsh, and libraries will remain closed, though curbside book pickups are still being processed.
