Donors raise more than $50,000 for Gloucester couple after letter asking to paint ‘eyesore’ home

Gloucester family receives anonymous letter asking to paint their ‘eyesore’ home A Gloucester family struggling to keep up their home amid health issues and financial strain received an anonymous letter asking that they paint their “eyesore” of a home.

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — More than 900 people have donated a total of more than $50,000 to a Gloucester couple who received a letter asking them to paint their “eyesore” house back in early August.

“Please paint me! Eyesore,” the letter read, mailed without a return address and signed, “Your neighbors.”

The fundraiser, which can be found on GoFundMe, was organized on behalf of Lynanne Cucuru, the post reads. It was created on August 6 and has since been shared more than 1,200 times.

Jim Cucuru, 71, owns the house with his wife Marilyn, 72, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 30 years ago. She later lost her ability to work full time and even her mobility. Jim himself has dealt with major heart issues as well as a kidney problem that required an eight-day stay in the ICU.

“When I put the letter on Facebook, I didn’t have any idea that this was going to happen,” Curcuru said to Boston 25’s Christine McCarthy earlier in August. “Gloucester’s always been a giving community… It’s humbling.”
