ALTON, N.H. — The only FAA-approved ice runway in the lower 48 states is open for business in a cove of New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee.

Conditions at the Alton Bay Seaplane Base ice runway are described Tuesday as good, although "a little bumpy in spots."

The runway is 100 feet wide (30.5 meters) 2,730 feet long (832 meters) and 50 feet wide (15.2 meters).

The bay is a public-use seaplane base in the summer and a plowed ice runway in the winter. The ice runway attracts several hundred pilots during the winter season.
