Third heatwave of the season begins today

BOSTON — Starting Wednesday, Boston is bracing for a heatwave.

Temperatures will be soaring into the 90s and that is on top of the already humid and muggy air we’ve been experiencing the last few days. That has prompted acting Mayor Kim Janey to declare a heat emergency.

Extreme heat can be dangerous, especially if you have pre-existing health issues. By declaring a heat emergency, cooling centers will open and tot sprays and pools will be open across the city. Starting Wednesday through Friday, city cooling centers will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It’s also important to remember to limit your activity outdoors, drink plenty of water, and try to get to sit in shaded areas if you can. Don’t leave kids or pets in the car.

At a news conference Tuesday, acting Mayor Kim Janey talked about a new program to help some of the most vulnerable residents when the temperatures rise.

“We are directing resources to provide immediate heat relief to our most vulnerable residents, and we’ve launched a pilot through the environment department age strong and the Boston Public Health Commission and the Boston Housing Authority to identify residents with the most need and provide them with cooling support.”

Some areas in the city are hotter due to elevation and limited shade from trees, and where there is more pavement than grass. That’s why city leaders are reminding people to take it easy when they’re outside these next few days.
