Red Sox trade for Ian Kinsler

BOSTON — Ian Kinsler, the veteran second baseman who has played for the Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels, was acquired by the Red Sox Monday night in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Ty Buffrey and minor league left-handed pitcher Williams Jerez.

The Red Sox also received cash considerations (reportedly $1 million) to help avoid an MLB luxury tax penalty. Kinsler is due an additional $3.7 million on his $11 million deal this season and will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Kinsler was traded to the Angels by the Tigers in December after spending four years in Detroit. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski traded for Kinsler in 2013 when he held the same position in Detroit. In a complicated deal that included significant cash headed from Detroit to Texas, Dombrowski sent Prince Fielder from the Tigers to the Rangers in exchange for Kinsler.
