Red Sox trade Andrew Benintendi to Royals

The Red Sox, Mets and Royals completed a three-way trade that will end with Andrew Benintendi playing in Kansas City.

The Sox received outfielder Franchy Cordero and two players to be named later from the Royals, as well as minor-league pitcher Josh Winckowski and another player to be named later from the Mets. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported the Sox also sent $2.8 million to Kansas City to offset a portion of Benintendi’s salary.

The Royals also sent Khalil Lee to the Mets.

Benintendi, the Red Sox top draft choice in 2015, made his debut in 2016 and never returned to the minors, playing with the Major League club through the 2020 season.

His best season was 2018, when he batted .290 while knocking in 87 runs. He also drove in 90 runs in 2017 while hitting 20 home runs.

Benintendi was limited in 2020 due to a ribcage injury.
