According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Manchester, Connecticut-based Royal Ice Cream Co. issued a recall Friday for certain lots of its Batch Ice Cream brand vanilla, ginger and mocha chip flavors that may be contaminated with listeria.

The recalled 16-ounce packages bear a manufacture date of Jan. 19 and a best-by date of July 19, 2023, the FDA said in a news release. The containers include the following UPC numbers: 837654968505 for vanilla, 83765496856 for ginger and 83765496853 for mocha chip, the release said.

The affected products were distributed to Market Basket and Roche Brothers stores in Massachusetts, as well as Big Y stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut, according to the news release.

Royal Ice Cream said it learned of the problem when FDA testing found listeria monocytogenes on processing equipment, the release said. The bacteria “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the release.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the release said.

The company said it has not received any reports of illness in connection with the products.

Customers who purchased the recalled items should return them to the store for a refund, according to the release. If you have questions about the recall, call Royal Ice Cream at 1-860-649-5358.
