7 killed, including 5 children, in wrong-way crash on Illinois interstate

HAMPSHIRE, Ill. — Seven people, including five children, were killed early Sunday after a head-on crash on an Illinois interstate northwest of Chicago, authorities said.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred at about 2:11 a.m. CDT on westbound Interstate 90 in Hampshire, WLS-TV reported.

Police said a van was traveling in the wrong direction on Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in McHenry County and crashed head-on into a car, according to WGN-TV.

The crash caused both vehicles to catch fire, police said.

Police said a woman and five children in the van were killed, and a woman in the other vehicle also died, the Chicago Tribune reported.

At least one person survived the crash and was taken to an area hospital with severe injuries, according to the newspaper.

The identities of the victims have not been released, WLS reported.

Westbound lanes of I-90 remained closed as troopers continue their investigation, according to the Tribune.
