3 dead in mid-air plane collision in Colorado

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Three people died after two planes crashed mid-air on Saturday morning in Colorado, fire officials in Mountain View confirmed.

Emergency responders received reports of the mid-air collision at around 8:54 a.m., and rescue crews arrived on the scene at around 10 a.m., KDVR reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a prepared statement that a single-engine Cessna 172 and a second aircraft collided and a Sonex Xenos crashed near Vance Brand Airport in Longmont, KMGH-TV reported.

Investigators are currently combing through two separate crash sites, the TV station reported.

According to officials with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, first responders found two people deceased inside the first plane. A third fatality, believed to be the sole occupant of the second plane, was located a short time later, KDVR reported.

The victims’ identities are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin, KMGH reported.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the collision.
