BOSTON — A Suffolk County Sheriff's Department corrections officer has been fired after an investigation, according to the agency.

Christopher Depina was fired for bringing contraband into the Suffolk County Jail, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

He had been an employee at the jail since April of this year and has now been criminally charged.

"The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department has zero tolerance for the introduction of contraband into our facilities," said Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins. "Our investigation uncovered evidence that this officer was bringing contraband into the facility, leading to his immediate termination."

The sheriff's department said the investigation is ongoing and it would not be commenting further.
