Religious statue decapitated outside local church

BURLINGTON, Mass. — Police are investigating the vandalism of several statues at St. Margaret's in Burlington.

According to Father Frank Silva, the heads were knocked off several Virgin Mary statues and the hands of other statues were damaged.

Silva said he was on a walk Tuesday morning when he noticed something wrong.

"It's very hurtful, it even leaves us very deeply sad," he said.

Police believe the vandalism happened between Monday night and Tuesday morning. Officers are still looking for any suspects involved.

This isn't the first situation of religious vandalism in the city.

Last November, graffiti was discovered at a Muslim center.

"We don't believe there's a connection to that whatsoever," Bulrington Police Det. Al Gagne said.

Police tell FOX25 this is being investigated as vandalism at this time and not a hate crime.

"It's important that they know that we pray that come to have a change of heart. We still love them, but we want them to get their act together," Silva said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Burlington Police Department at (781) 272-1212.
