Fire burns part of Somerville home, occupants were home when the blaze started

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — As a fire raged through a Somerville home, residents that were inside at the time had to quickly evacuate on Friday afternoon.

The fire, which started on the first floor of the home on 134 Willow Avenue, was a close call for the occupants. Residents on the top floor told Boston 25 News that two of the three people who live on that floor were home when the fire started.

While no official cause has been released yet, one resident said he heard someone on the first floor scream, “Oh my god the mattress is on fire.”

Video from a viewer at the scene shows flames coming out from the bottom level, but smoke is seen filling both floors of the two-unit home.

Firefighters said they were able to knock down the fire within a few minutes of arriving on scene.

“Fire came out of the first floor windows,” said Somerville District Fire Chief Jay Keane. “[We] did a major search, all the occupants were out and it looks like the fire was confined to that first floor room with a little extension to the second floor.”

All occupants were able to get out safely, but one or two firefighters seem to have suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters say they continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire, but don’t believe it to be suspicious.
