Police seeking man who allegedly tried to kidnap a baby in a stroller in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Police are seeking to identify a man who allegedly tried to steal a baby from a stroller in an attempted kidnapping in Cambridge Tuesday morning.

The man, who is accused of assaulting a woman who was pushing her child in a stroller, was seen yelling at and striking the woman with a phone, according to Cambridge Police.

He then reportedly grabbed and attempted to pull the stroller, which was carrying the woman's 1-year-old child.

"I heard the commotion and saw him running with a UPS guy chasing him. The UPS guy told me he was trying to take the kid," said a witness who asked not to be identified.

The assault occurred in the area of Harvard and Prospect streets at around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

“He put up two cameras in her face, one hit her. She tried to create some space and used a water bottle to fend him off," said Jeremy Warnick, communications director for the Cambridge Police Department.

But it didn't end there.

“They got into a tugging match with the stroller. She was able to free the stroller from his hands," Warnick said.

Witnesses snapped a picture of the man, who was barefoot, before he ran off.

Police said he is a white man in his late 20s, wearing a multi-colored hat, a green shirt, khaki shorts, and brown backpack. He was not wearing any shoes at the time of the incident.

The man fled in the direction of Inman Street, toward Central Square, when witnesses lost sight of him.

Police say the mother and daughter were shaken but not injured.

"Physically unharmed, thankfully, but emotionally, I’m sure it’s pretty scarring," Warnick said.
