Police investigate sudden death of 2-year-old in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A child was found unresponsive in Worcester Monday and rushed to the hospital.

Worcester firefighters were called to 4 Wellington St. where Jonathan Santiago says he was over a friend's apartment for coffee late Monday morning when the unthinkable happened.

"I walked in this morning, 15 minutes later that's when she comes out with the baby saying, 'Oh, something's wrong with the baby,' then she threw me the phone and I called the ambulance," he said.

Santiago said his friend's 2-year-old daughter was rushed to the hospital after the disturbing discovery. He said the girl, whose name is Genevive "Gigi" Brown, is one of three kids in the home and her mother was expecting.

Officials confirmed Monday evening that the child passed away.

Police say there were no signs of apparent trauma on the 2-year-old and that was not a surprise to Kristopher Posterro. His sister is the toddler's mother.

"Perfect mother-daughter bond. Everywhere my sister went she was right there, attached to her hip. Everywhere," he said.

Devastated friends and family left the apartment building with Worcester investigators.

"She's a good mom, she does what she really needs to do to keep her kids good. But this is just something that is crazy. It just happened," Santiago said.

Although the cause of death is unknown, officials will be treating this incident as a sudden death investigation.

No charges have been filed. Family members say DCF removed the two other children from the apartment. An autopsy was underway on Tuesday.
