One week remains in second deadline for Merrimack Valley gas restoration

Crews work on buried gas pipes in Lawrence.

LAWRENCE, Mass. — One week before Columbia Gas' self-imposed deadline from full service restoration in the Merrimack Valley, the company held several open houses for customers.

The company says it has restored service to 96 percent of customers. Columbia officials say most of those who don't have service are working independently from the company.

So far, nearly $73 million in claims have been paid.

We're told 190 families were still in temporary housing while waiting for the restoration to be complete.
