Off-duty police officer helps rescue man from burning building

HUDSON, N.H. — An off-duty police officer helped rescue a man from a burning building in New Hampshire.

The fire broke out inside an apartment on Central Street in Hudson, New Hampshire around 2 a.m., trapping a man inside.

Off-duty Officer Colby Morton was driving by the home when she saw a glow from the second floor.

"She saw flames at an upstairs apartment coming through the window, and immediately pulled over," said Hudson Police Chief William Avery.

She called for help and moments later, two other officers arrived. The three of them forced their way into the home by breaking a window and immediately started searching.

"He could not see at all, unless he was down on his stomach because of the amount of smoke inside the building," said Avery.

One of the officers found the man and managed to pull him to safety.

"He was down on the ground and observed a male part laying down," Avery said.

Investigators spent nearly 17 hours combing through the house, although they would not say what they were looking for.

The victim was taken to a Boston area hospital.

All of the officers involved at OK and the investigation continues.
