New MSP Homeland Security division to be helping with Saturday's protests

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police will be utilizing its new Homeland Security Division Saturday while helping the Boston Police Department patrol the opposing rallies in downtown Boston.

“The fundamental objective is to make sure everybody comes out safe while protecting people's first amendment right to peacefully congregate in a public square,” said Gov. Charlie Baker.

At Massachusetts State Police Headquarters, flanked by top politicians and law enforcement officials, Gov. Charlie Baker made it clear safety is priority one this weekend.

The leaders were there to discuss how the new Massachusetts State Police Homeland Security Division will eventually look.

The new division will gather intelligence from the internet, social media, law enforcement sources about impending threats, and it will help direct a response.

The governor said the new division will be up and running Saturday, helping Boston police keep the peace.

“And one of the major elements of that, from the strategic point of view, is going to keep the groups separated and that will be done using both human beings as well as fences and other devices,” said Baker.

Boston has recently seen its share of large but peaceful protests, and State Police are hoping to keep the streak going on Saturday.

“We’re preparing for the worst as we always do, we are hoping for the best,” said Col. Richard McKeon.

The State Police would not reveal how many troopers will be deployed Saturday, but they are making it clear, they will be on scene in support of Boston Police.

The Boston Police will have the primary role on Saturday.
