WINDHAM, NH — A 40 car pile-up closed down 93 southbound from Exit 4 to the Mass border Friday.
"We tried to slow down, couldn't slow down fast enough to not hit each other...It was really sudden the traffic was moving along super fast. Then all of a sudden people tried to slow down," said Sarah Young of Epsom, New Hampshire, who was involved in the pile-up.
Police believe a snow squall is responsible for the crashes, along with the fact that stretch is a two-lane highway. Once one accident happens, cars have nowhere to go and they pile up.
In video from the scene, multiple damaged cars can be seen along the side of the road. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries.
Police closed down about a mile stretch of the highway for an hour.
"We got dispatched to one crash, and by the time we arrived on scene there were probably 10 to 15 separate collisions," said Trooper Andrew Monaco.
All of it made for a busy day for area tow truck drivers.
"There were a few cars that were spun around," said tow truck driver Shane Bauchman.
Bauchman told FOX25's Bob Ward that he was on the other side of the highway when the weather changed, and he thought he was going to get trapped.
"I was driving northbound, and it was a whiteout. I couldn't see a good 40-50 feet in front of me," he said.
New Hampshire is planning on widening that section of the highway soon.
